What is EECP?
EECP stands for Enhanced External Counterpulsation.
What is EECP therapy?
EECP is a non-invasive treatment for angina pectoris by increasing coronary blood flow in ischemic areas of the heart. EECP encourages blood vessels to open small channels around the narrowed or blocked arteries which eventually become "natural bypass" vessels to provide blood flow to heart muscle that will relieve or eliminate angina.
EECP treatment uses several blood pressure cuffs on both legs and buttocks to gently, but firmly, compress the blood vessels there to boost blood flow to your heart. Each wave is timed to your heartbeat. So more blood goes there when it’s relaxing.
When your heart pumps again, pressure is released right away. This lets blood be pumped more easily.
The standard course of treatment is one hour per day, five days per week, for seven weeks (a total of 35 one-hour sessions).
